This week I decided to embark on eventually building my own Boxee Box. Having tried other media players including XBMC and Windows Media Centre, I was at my wits end. I was therefore, understandably over joyed when I discovered the potential Boxee has. Simply head over to their website and hit the download button. The download took a couple of minutes, and then it was ready to be installed on my dedicated media centre machine. Installation was a breeze, followed by the requirement to set up an account with boxee or the option to log in using facebook connect. I used this option, which now enables a nice feature allowing me to see a stream of all the youtube and BBC iPlayer content my Facebook pals have posted.
Once logged in I proceeded to set up my sources, which are both local and networked. Boxee does take a while after log in to detect the networked section, however this may just be my network drive playing up. Once the drive is connected it happily streams movies with no problems at all, allowing for pausing and skipping through chapters seamlessly. Film covers and information is downloaded from IMDB and makes the process of selecting which of your films to watch very easy. The same can be said for the music feature, with all album art and artist information being downloaded.
My favourite feature of Boxee by far is the apps function. There are literally thousands of apps at your disposal, enabling you to do things such as easily watch BBC iPlayer and Youtube and your TV, as well as use your favourite subscription movie service, or browse the web from the comfort of your sofa.
Boxee also offers users on demand TV – simply head to tv and select ‘ TV library – This opens a window with thousands of hours of popular TV shows gathered from various on demand TV services, all there for you to stream at your leisure.
Overall I think Boxee is the best media centre out there right now, and I would highly recommend it for a pleasureable media viewing experience.
